Sunday was a day for celebrating the dead (well not really- since actual Dia de los Muertos is in November but the arena was booked for a huge carnival so late October was the closest the promotion was going to get) and for watching lucha. Dia de los Muertos, the biggest show of the year for the promotion, was filled with high spots and drama.

El Macho vs TBD (El Sovietico)Recap:The old man still has some life in those legs. El Macho, in his first match post hip surgery took on the Russian Luchador (is that really a thing?) El Sovietico, who was only officially announced minutes before the show. Macho looked fully healthy, performing leap frogs and flips without any noticeable physical restrictions. The end saw Sovietico attempt some sort of move from outside the ring where he misjudged his own leaping distance, falling about a foot short and leaving an opening for Macho to hit his signature splash and open the show with a win.
Winner: El Macho
Rating: ***Hexagon Jr vs VaqueroRecap:This was largely believed to be Hexagon’s chance to make a challenge for the title if he managed a victory- but alas no one is allowed nice things. Hex tried to go straight to the finish at the opening bell, very nearly catching Vaquero off guard- but the rookie continues to impress by shaking off the early offense and slowly picking apart the former champion. With the win, Vaquero stays undefeated and perhaps starts to make his own claim on the belt...
Winner: Vaquero
Rating: ****ZDM (La Guerra) vs Doctor Dorado, Super Mohan, & El Hijo de Blue PumaRecap:This one had drama before the opening bell even rang. First, it was announced El Descosido would be unavailable to wrestle due to a concussion suffered allegedly from a coconut falling on his head (we were unable to verify this story). Their replacement would be none other than
TOCA, the (briefly) former member of ZDM- announced as a one night only partner (we’re told the rest of ZDM proper insisted that this was called out).
The match itself was a bit of a hot mess, though an entertaining one. Toca’s antics seemed to keep the rest of ZDM distracted, and the added motivation of Super Mohan, who was chastised by the group on his G2 performance, left the door open for a massive upset courtesy of former Dominican Golden Champion Doctor Dorado.
Winner: Doctor Dorado, Super Mohan, Hijo de Blue Puma
Rating: ***John Logan vs El Destructo Recap:The beginning of a rough day for Paco Pequeno. After spending most of the year thwarting Paco’s hired monsters, Pequeno had seemed to think he had the answer to his problems in his newest asset, El Destructo. John Logan had other plans however- scoring a measure of revenge against the brutal attack that another client, Colossus Rhodes, inflicted on the former World Champ. This match was a slugfest, and while Destructo seems like a tank of a human, he also seemed a tad green in the ring. Logan took advantage, but it wasn’t easy getting the big man to stay down. It took Logan Run DDTs and a Sky High to finally finish off the monster.
Winner: John Logan
Rating: ****Los Terribles vs Dungeon Dominguez & Machine Gun Mayhem Recap:Paco’s night was just getting started, as his makeshift tag team looked completely disorganized against the crowd pleasing rudo cousins. Machine Gun Mayhem looked disinterested in winning the match, and was constantly arguing with Paco in the corner. The result was a team of powerhouses inflicting pain with no real plan, which left the door open for Los Terribles to pick up a huge win.
After the match, the usually stoic Dungeon was seen getting in the face of Machine Gun- and for a moment it seemed like they might come to blows before Paco calmed both men down and took them to the back, visibly frustrated himself.
Winner: Los Terribles
Rating: ***Lucha POWER Championship: Diego Guerrero (c) vs "Perfection" Jack GoldRecap:Noticeably absent from Jack Gold’s corner was his theoretical manager, Paco Pequeno. Maybe he was still settling down MGM and Dungeon? Maybe Gold wanted to prove he could do it on his own? Or maybe there were more nefarious plans in the works. This match had all the makings of a classic “Match of the Year” flavor to it, with both men trading haymakers. Gold seemed destined to win the belt, hitting back to back Gold Clashes- and Diego finding a way to kick out each time.
But before we could get the definitive ending we deserved… out came El Destructo to interfere in the match. While Destructo took swings at both men, the referee became distracted, and missed Paco Pequeno running a new timekeeper down to the ring. With order restored and Destructo removed from the ring- we assumed the match would continue in earnest. It did not, with the bell sounding for a “submission” victory in favor of the champ, with out any visible tap from Jack Gold.
Winner: Diego Guerrero
Rating: ****After the show…. El Macho was quick to announce a rematch for the title at the promotions next show, citing Paco’s interference and “this is what the fans want.” No timetable was given for the next show, and Macho was noncommittal that it would happen before the end of the year. Not a whole lot else from the owner, but once he was finished- Paco Pequeno’s turn was a lot more eventful…
